We have an immediate need for a Senior Automation Engineer for our facility in the East Twin Cities metro area to develop business cases for a 3-5-year plan to automate and add robots over both Minnesota and Florida locations.  The ideal candidate will work with internal controls engineer/PLC and external vendors to design and build automation/ robotic systems as well as integrate outdated systems as needed into upgraded operational systems. 

Critical Success Criteria:
The Senior Automation Engineer will own the company’s automation technology roadmap and will champion plant automation efforts to drive safety, quality and productivity improvements, to include:
• Collaborating with R&D and operations leadership to assess plant automation opportunities and identify optimal solutions in support of overall company strategy.
• Overseeing and supporting the design and implementation of automation solutions from initial concept to a finished product in partnership with engineering, production, maintenance and others as needed.
• Overseeing project workflow using the stage-gate project management process and support internal and external resources to ensure on-time delivery of projects, meeting quality standards and budget expectations.

Other Responsibilities:
• Develop business cases using engineering economics (IRR/NPV/EVA) to rank automation opportunities
• Assess automation opportunities and help create innovative equipment designs to solve complex problems
• Work with internal and external partners to develop machine design concepts and robotic technologies
• Coordinate cross-functional teams to pilot prototypes, evaluating operational feasibility and reliability
• Manage operational and project costs by approving expenditures and administering contracts
• Provide support for troubleshooting equipment
• Provide technical guidance, problem solving and advice to others in the team and stakeholders
• Act as subject matter expert available to operations to offer technical consulting services on a need’s basis
• Develop and maintain relationships with external technical expertise
• Remain current on the latest developments in automation technologies and incorporate it into new initiatives
• Prepare detailed technical reports and offer conclusive recommendations
• Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are observed.

Essential Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Equivalent
• 10+ years’ relevant engineering experience. Ideally with exposure to heavy industrial operations
• 3+ years’ experience programing and testing robots in manufacturing environments
• PLC programming and Robot programming skills
• Experience using AutoCAD electrical and mechanical drawing packages
• Hands-on and a mechanical aptitude
• Strong project management experience with multi-disciplinary teams
• Desire to mentor and transfer knowledge and skills to other stakeholders in the organization
• Ability to conduct fundamental research, analyze information and arrive at defensible conclusions
• Diligent in following safety protocols and recognizing potential hazards
• Skilled in MS Office for use in preparing reports and documents
• Self-motivated and directed, ability to work well under pressure, manage and prioritize multiple tasks concurrently, attend to details, and meet deadlines
• First-rate interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communications and conflict resolution, ensuring team cooperation
• Knowledge of heavy industrial equipment and automation/ robots
• Capable of lifting 30 lbs. and standing for extended durations when performing plant-based test work with or without reasonable accommodation
• Capable of wearing respiratory protection and other PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, boots, hearing protection) in hot work environment up to 8 hours per day
• 20/20 vision, or vision corrected to 20/20
• Willingness for up to 20% travel to Tampa site and other location on a as needed basis

Preferred:
• Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Equivalent
• Strong experience with Allen-Bradley programming or Wonderware
